Firewood Grade Description

Low grade– Consists of the following species of wood- Cottonwood, Poplar, Willow, Aspen and other wood that is native and abundant in this area of MT, hence the lower cost; less creosote- slightly lower output of heat unless stove is full; longer and cleaner burning than the mid grade; steady heat; can have slightly more ash build up; Great wood to heat a home

Mid Grade– Consists of Ponderosa Pine, Lodge pole Pine, Black Pine, Larch Pine, Cedars etc.; has a higher output of creosote and slightly shorter burn time than the other grades; it has a higher initial output of heat and it is a great smelling and sounding wood when burned.

Semi Mid Grade-An in-between grade from Mid grade and High Grade; consisting of Fur and Spruce. Low to little creosote output; harder wood that burns hot and longer; sounds and smells great!

High Grade- Hardwoods-Consists of Ash, Elm, Locust, Oak, Walnut, etc.; has the highest btu/heat output; lasts longer in the stove; can take more to time get started in the stove but once started it takes less wood to heat an area than the other grades

High Grade- Fruitwoods- Consists of Apple, Cherry, Plum, Maple, Alder, etc.;  This wood is sorted off for smoking purposes- BBQ’s in the backyard, restaurants, food trucks. Clean burning; great for adding that flavor to a meal

Burning Firewood Suggestions

Depending on your heat output needs, Low Grade will work great for moderate to cold evenings and days- I suggest that if you have a wood burning stove- trying a 2 to 1 ratio (2 cords Low Grade/ 1 cord Pine) By mixing these two you can utilize the hot quick burn of pine to get the low grade going well- which will have a longer burn time and leave you with a pan of coals in the morning. If you don’t want to worry about mixing, our semi mid and high grade woods are the best option for higher and longer heat outputs.

Another suggestion if you are only burning pine or Mid grade- Every 3 cords or so- try burning a half cord of our High Grade (Hardwoods); After inspecting and cleaning your chimney the hardwoods are cleaner and hotter burning and will help with the buildup of creosote in the chimney. Inspect and clean the chimney at least once a year to be sure things look good for continued burning.
